The Families Commission is New
Zealand’s centre of excellence for
knowledge about families and
whānau. It is a dedicated research,
evaluation and knowledge
organisation.
The Commission was established
under the Families Commission
Act 2003. It is governed by a Board
and accountable to the Minister
for Social Development. Under the
Crown Entities Act 2004, the Families
Commission is an autonomous
Crown Entity.
The evidence that the Commission
generates informs and influences
the work of policy, funding and
service delivery agencies. These
agencies in turn develop the
policies, fund the programmes and
provide services for New Zealand
families and whānau.
In its Centre for Family andWhānau
Knowledge, the Commission
focuses on building New Zealand’s
knowledge base of how to improve
the strength, resilience and
wellbeing of New Zealand’s families
and whānau. Knowledge Centre
activities include:
research into the factors affecting
family and whānau wellbeing
an Annual Family Status Report
that measures and monitors the
wellbeing of New Zealand families
