Functions
NZSIS provides the New Zealand
Government with intelligence and
advice on security issues within the
terms of the New Zealand Security
Intelligence Act 1969. NZSIS is a
civilian organisation governed by
statute. The Director of Security,
appointed by the Governor-General,
is responsible to the Minister in
Charge of the New Zealand Security
Intelligence Service for its efficient
and proper working.
The functions of NZSIS include:
Obtaining, correlating and
evaluating intelligence relevant to
security;
Communicating intelligence to
such persons as the Director of
Security considers to be in the
interests of security;
Advising the Government about
matters relevant to security;
Cooperating with other
organisations in New Zealand and
abroad that can assist the NZSIS
to carry out its job;
Making recommendations
relevant to security in respect
of immigration and citizenship
matters;
Conducting enquiries into
whether particular individuals
should be granted security
clearances, and making
recommendations based on those
enquiries; and
Providing advice on protective
security matters.
Security means:
The protection of New Zealand
from acts of espionage, sabotage,
or subversion, whether or
not they are directed from or
intended to be committed in New
Zealand.
The identification of foreign
capabilities, intentions or
activities within or relating to
New Zealand that impact on
New Zealand’s international or
economic well being.
The protection of New Zealand
from activities within or
relating to New Zealand that
are influenced by any foreign
organisation or foreign person;
and are clandestine or deceptive
or threaten the safety of any
person; and impact adversely on
New Zealand’s international or
economic well-being; and
The prevention of any terrorist act
and of any activity relating to the
carrying out or facilitating of any
terrorist act.

New Zealand Symphony Orchestra,
founded in 1946, is the country’s
premier professional orchestra.
New Zealand’s national full-time,
full sized symphony orchestra,
functions as a Crown Entity with 90
players performing more than 100
concerts annually. Touring looms
large in the orchestra’s activities
with programmes in Auckland,
Wellington and other New Zealand
towns and cities.
Pietari Inkinen is the NZSO’s Music
Director.
In November 2010 the NZSO
returned from the most prestigious
and successful international
tour in its history. Beginning
at the Shanghai World Expo
and continuing onto Germany,
Slovenia, Switzerland and Austria’s
Musikverein in Vienna – they played
to sold out audiences and drew
critical acclaim from the European
press.
The NZSO has a strong commitment
to the development of New Zealand
music and seeks to ensure that both
new commissions and established
works by New Zealand composers
have a significant presence in its
season.
